The origins of the name are debated but one is that Robert E. Lee used it to refer to a specific group of Irish Union soldiers who handed him his traitorous ass. Another is that there was a KKK march in South Bend and the students went out there and beat their racist ass.

Regardless, whenever there’s fighting Irish around someone’s getting their ass kicked. ☘️

And now I’m 10000x more in love with the name. LFGO Irish!

I'm about a decade older and grew up in rural Kansas, and yet pretty much everything in this hits home with me, including the roller coaster ride from A&M to NIU to Purdue and all the way to the title game last year. Here's hoping we both have the same feeling tonight we had after the A&M game (or after the first drive of the title game).

I was at the title game and that first drive…I wish I could just repeat it over and over and over and over. The Ohio State fans were silent around us. Fuck. Hahaha

Love this one Alex. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying

“The three hardest jobs in America are president of the United States, mayor of New York City and football coach of Notre Dame.”

Keep writing!

while I hate you for the dogshit Purdue reference - as I am 3rd of 4 generations to graduate there - you are not wrong sir on this year's squad! Forget that hate part, love your work and style. Please keep it up. Our Dad was also Army/ROTC, at dogshit aformentioned...

Haha much appreciated man and my condolences on the squad this year.

I have such a weird college football connection.

Double-legacy at the University of Southern Landmass

Attended a D3 school that didn’t even have a football team until my last year.

My old man was Army, but he was ROTC.

My FIL was career Navy, but he was a “Mustang.” (So an enlistee who earned a degree while on active duty, and was commissioned.)

My wife attended Old Dominion, which just went D1 as she was near graduation.

My brother went to Virginia A&M^H^H^HTech.

We watch Army-Navy, and there’s a fair amount of taunting, but…

Was nice seeing somebody outside the SEC and ACC in the final.

I guess I get the attraction of Midwest football, but I don’t really get it, otherwise.

Never been to South Bend, but I have been to Bloomington. *shiver* But I guess an IU football game might be okay.

IU is shockingly good this year! We (Monmouth University) played Old Dominion in the very short time I played football there.

Cam Cameron was an IU guy, and that program produced Trent Green and Antoine Randel-El.

Football from the VA schools is really something from the past 25-or-so years. When I was young, it was basically UVA, and that was it. JMU, W&M were basically D2 also-rans.

JMU had a day today man! Haha

If Michigan can recover from bottoming out and win a national championship there's still a window for Notre Dame. The blue blood brands have too much history, cachet, and most importantly, money, to completely fall off.

The NIL should be a God send for programs with the coffers that Notre Dame and Michigan have.
